Produced using the same technique behind Taiwan’s celebrated honey black teas, the oxidation process results in a natural honey sweetness and a delicate floral quality. This tea blend has minimal tannins, and softly aromatic qualities that happens to be made entirely from cultivars made in Saitama. The blend changes year to year, drawn from up to nine Saitama-bred cultivars, whichever were ready for black tea production that harvest, making each batch a one-season expression of what the region’s distinctive genetics can do when processed with this level of intention.

The region’s tea farms are concentrated around a rolling landscape of tea fields that stretches as far as the eye can see. Saitama’s cooler climate slows leaf growth, concentrating flavor and building the robust, full-bodied character that Saitama tea has been known for since the Edo period. A traditional saying captures it well: Uji for color, Shizuoka for aroma, Sayama for taste.

Saitama is home to a cluster of cultivars developed specifically for the region’s climate — varieties like Sayamakaori, Hokumei, and Yumewakaba that perform in cooler conditions and carry aromatics not found in mainstream cultivars like Yabukita. It is from these cultivars that our Saitama black tea blend is made, a tea that could only come from this place, from a producer who has spent decades learning exactly what the region’s unique genetics can do.
